Multiple people injured in shooting in Richmond, Virginia | Virginia

A shooting near Virginia Commonwealth University in downtown Richmond injured multiple people Tuesday, a police spokeswoman said.

VCU said in an evening online alert that officers were on the scene in the Monroe Park area, near campus and a large theater.

Matthew Stanley, a Richmond Public Schools spokesman, said via email that he did not have full details about what happened, but was able to confirm that an incident occurred in Monroe Park after a high school graduation.

According to local news station WTVR, the shooting occurred as the Huguenot high school graduation ceremony was ending. A reporter was told there were at least four shooting victims, but their conditions had not been released.

Images and video from the scene show law enforcement officers inside and outside the Altria Theater, located in downtown Richmond on the VCU campus. The theater is the site of the Richmond Public Schools high school graduation ceremonies.

Richmond Public Schools said on its website that a different graduation scheduled for later Tuesday had been canceled “out of an abundance of caution.”
