Scientists created the Wiring Map of Neurons in Insect’s Brain a new research that enhanced our understanding of Brain behavior.

(The study is published in Science generals on 10 March 2023.)

What Research is? :

Scientists have mapped the brain of the fruit fly larva, showing it’s every single neuron and how they’re wired together.

This will help scientists to understand the basic principles of signals traveling through the brain at the neural level and lead to behavior and learning.

Designing of Map took 12 years of meticulous work and locates all 3,016 neurons in the brain of a larval fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster).  It depicts 548,000 points of connection or synapses between those brain cells.

Brain Neurons

How the map was designed ? ;

scientists sliced a larval fly brain into 5,000 sections at the micro level and took microscopic images of each slice. They arranged these images together to form a 3D volume. By analyzing the images, and identifying individual cells within them they manually traced their wires.

Researchers identified networks of neurons sending data from one side of the brain to the other, (March 9 in the journal Science). Researchers classified 93 distinct types of neurons, that differ in their shape, proposed function, and connection to other neurons.

What does Scientist say? :

“The way the brain circuit is structured influences the computations the brain can do,” Marta Zlatic a neuroscientist from the University of Cambridge.

“Up until this point, we’ve not seen the structure of any brain except the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans, the tadpole of a low chordate, and the larva of a marine annelid, all of which have several hundred neurons,” said professor Marta Zlatic from the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology.

What researcher observed from the brain study ?:

the researchers observed the connecting structures were determined repetitive among the ingoing and outgoing neurons in the part of the brain that permit us to learn and remember what we’ve learned.

Researcher conclusion  :

“What we learned about code for fruit flies will have implications for the code for humans,” explains Vogelstein. “That’s what we want to understand – how to write a program that leads to a human brain network.

“It’s been 50 years and this is the first brain connectome. It’s a flag in the sand that we can do this,” Vogelstein utter. “Everything has been working up to this.”
