Leeds fan arrested, banned for life after confrontation with Howe


A Leeds United fan has been arrested and given a life ban from the club after confronting Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe at Elland Road on Saturday.

The supporters escaped security and ran up to the touchline to face Howe in the final moments of a 2-2 draw between clubs.

Leeds confirmed he was arrested after the fan was taken by security after hitting the Newcastle manager in the face.

club statement “Leeds United can confirm today that they have been arrested and given a life ban following the incident in the Premier League game against Newcastle United.”

Speaking to BT Sport about the incident after the game, Howe said: “It was a real surprise. I was focused on the game. It was unthinkable that something like this could happen.”

“I can’t repeat what he said, but it makes me think ‘what if’,” he added.

Leeds took the lead with captain Luke Eyring’s goal in the seventh minute before Callum Wilson scored two penalties on both sides at half-time to give Newcastle the lead. Defender Rasmus Christensen managed to save a point before Junior Firpo was sent off in stoppage time.

Leeds are still in the relegation zone but move up one place to 18th with 31 points, one point behind Everton in 17th, while Newcastle remain third with 66 points.
