Former Representative Will Hurd is anything but keen on another election showdown between President Biden and Donald Trump, a view polls show the majority of Americans agree with.
Mr. Hurd, who was considered a rising star in the GOP and was the only Republican in the Black House at the time, declined to seek re-election in 2020.
“The reality is that two-thirds of Americans want someone other than Donald Trump and Joe Biden. It’s like the rematch from hell,” Mr. Hurd said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “Nobody wants it to be their choice. There are better options out there, and that’s why we need to get more people to vote in the primaries.
With Mr. Trump as the undisputed leader among GOP challengers, the 2024 White House race is poised to offer Americans the Trump-Biden turnaround that few voters say they want.
A recent NBC News poll showed that 70% of voters say Mr. Biden should not seek re-election, while 60% say the same about Mr. Trump.
“If we had more people voting in the primaries, we would see better choices in November; choices that we would actually like and be happy to vote for,” Hurd said.
Mr Hurd, a longtime critic of Mr Trump and his party’s struggles to bring more diversity to his base, said he was also considering a presidential race and would make a decision by the end of the month.
“The decision has to be made on my future very soon,” the Texas Republican said. “I think anyone’s decision about their future in politics has to be made before Memorial Day.”
