Former President Donald Trump thinks it’s not a good idea to mock President Biden over his age-related mental decline.
Mr Trump made the remarks during a town hall meeting in Iowa with Fox News host Sean Hannity, during which the couple addressed the president’s downfall at the start of the Air Force Academy earlier in the day when Mr. Biden tripped over a small sandbag.
Mr Trump said the fall was “sad” and looked bad.
Mr. Hannity noted that Mr. Trump is reluctant to mock Mr. Biden’s declining mental state, then the Fox News host said of Mr. Biden “I doubt he knows what day of the week we are today”.
The former president then pushed back against longtime supporter Mr Hannity.
“I asked Sean not to joke about it. Because he was joking about it,” Mr Trump told the assembled voters.
“I said, ‘I honestly don’t think it’s right for you or anyone to joke about this because it’s a serious issue,'” he continued Thursday.
Mr Trump said talking about Mr Biden’s cognitive issues was fine, but it was not fair to joke about it.
Mr. Biden has previously made headlines for his falls, including tripping on the stairs of Air Force One in 2021 and falling off his bike while riding in Delaware last summer.
At 80, Mr. Biden is the oldest sitting president in US history. Mr Trump, who turns 77 next month, would become the eldest of his second term if he wins the 2024 presidential race.
