53-year-old soccer fan dies after falling from 50 feet during Argentina game


A fan fell to his death at a football match in Argentina on Saturday.

A 53-year-old man fell about 50 feet from the top of the Estadio Monumental during the match between River Plate and Defensa y Justicia, Ole newspaper reported.

The match was suspended and immediately resumed, but shortly after the referee postponed the game.

River Plate issued a statement saying the man “jumped into the void… died on the spot.”

The club announced that the stadium was “completely evacuated” 30 minutes after the incident and that “there were no conditions in the stands or surrounding areas where violence could occur.”

The fan had a season ticket for the Grandstand of Shibori Alta, the team added.

River Plate said local authorities were investigating the death.
